Around the Schools

Making a difference - just like Jesus

Tasmanian Catholic schools and colleges continue to raise funds to support the communities devastated by the earthquake and aftershocks in Nepal. Stella Maris Catholic School wanted to live out their school mission ‘dare to step out and make a difference – just like Jesus’ by responding to the plight of the Nepalese people.

Twelve Year 6 Student Representative Council (SRC) members created a plan to raise funds and held a presentation during a School assembly to get everyone involved with a goal of raising $750 to purchase ten tents to send to Nepal.

The SRC set about advertising a free dress day and created a Mount Everest model to display fundraising efforts. The response from students and staff was amazing and the community raised over $2,200, triple what they hoped to achieve.

Developing creativity

Much investigation, consultation, and planning went into Larmenier Catholic School’s master plan, guiding developments over a five year period. Aiming to create a school environment that fosters creative play, the administration looked for ways to incorporate challenges and opportunities into student learning.

A key achievement of this is the recent development of a fantastic new early childhood playground. Built to engage and develop students from Kindergarten to Grade 2, the playground provides students the opportunity to discover their environment, cooperate with their peers and play till their hearts content.

Celebrating Don Bosco

On Sunday 17 May 2015 Dominic College came together to remember and celebrate the 200th birthday of the founder of the Salesian Order and patron saint to the College, St John Bosco (also known as Don Bosco).

The College community, including families, staff and the Salesians came together to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco. The Feast Day started with a community Mass, followed by a complimentary BBQ, and then games and activities known as the 'Dominic Cup' in the afternoon to complete the day with students, staff and families taking part in a series of team building and fun exercises to earn points.
